Emmanuel Lopez

Hi Everyone! I’m Emmanuel and I am a proud first generation college graduate from a LatinX background. My parents immigrated from Mexico to the US and worked hard to provide me with an opportunity to obtain my college degree. I’m doing this podcast to support first generation students on their educational journey! Especially for the students out there in the Community College where many amazing first generation students are! I attended Modesto Junior College and transferred to UC Santa Barbara where I earned a Bachelor’s in History. I wanted to be a high school teacher at first, but I enjoyed college so much I decided to serve college students! I also enjoyed learning and I wanted more so I applied to graduate school. I pursued my Master’s Degree at UCLA and obtained my Master’s in Education with an emphasis in Counseling and Student Affairs. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to serve students and after years of working at private universities, CSUs and UCs I finally came back to where it all had started for me, the community college. I feel lucky to work with so many students and thought why not create a podcast to address some common challenges. I partnered up with my awesome cohost, Yetunde so we can spread some positive and informative tips to help you navigate your educational journey! We hope you find this information helpful and avoid some of the pitfalls out there and take advantage of all the the amazing resources college has to offer! Questions don’t hesitate to post them up so we can address some during our podcast!

Yetunde Osikomaiya

As a community college counselor, my passion is to help others. As a daughter of immigrant parents, I know the unique challenges that come with being a first-generation college student especially as a person of culture. My ultimate goal is to help students navigate the confusing world of higher education and support them in making wise decisions beginning in high school and through college. I worked for over ten years in the college financial aid world and even briefly in the for-profit college sector. Both my professional and personal experiences led me to joining this podcast so that I can share my knowledge to the benefit of more students.  I am excited to go on this journey with you!
